Performance Optimization and Profiling

Performance Profiling & Bottleneck Resolution

Optimizing Node.js applications requires systematic diagnosis rather than blind guesswork. The primary goal is preventing the Event Loop from blocking.

Identifying Bottlenecks

If the CPU operates at 100% capacity but network throughput is minimal, the application suffers from synchronous JS blocking (e.g., massive JSON parsing). If CPU usage is minimal but response times are slow, the application is suffering from I/O constraints (e.g., missing database indexes).

Profiling Arsenal

  • Node Clinic (clinic.js): Generates visual flamegraphs indicating exactly which JavaScript functions are consuming execution time.
  • V8 Profiler (--prof): Instructs V8 to output raw C-level tick data for granular analysis.

Core Optimization Vectors

Replace massive data loads with piping Streams to drop memory consumption by magnitudes. Offload heavy computational logic (like image processing) to separate Worker Threads.
