Callbacks and the Callback Pattern
The Genesis of Asynchrony: Callbacks
Callbacks are the foundation upon which Node.js's asynchronous, non-blocking I/O model was built. By passing functions as arguments, developers instruct Node.js on what to execute once a prolonged system operation concludes.
The Error-First Convention
Node.js popularized the Error-First Callback Pattern. The convention dictates that the first argument of the callback is reserved for an Error object (or null if successful), and the subsequent arguments contain the resulting data.
This design enforces explicit error handling at every juncture of an asynchronous flow.
Evolution: The Demise of Callback Hell
Deeply nested callbacks—affectionately termed the "Pyramid of Doom"—made codeblocks unreadable and incredibly brittle. Modern Node.js APIs natively return Promises, allowing developers to utilize async/await and escape callback hell entirely.
