Message Queues and Async Communication
Asynchronous Topologies: Message Queues
When monolithic architectures decompose into microservices, synchronous HTTP communication introduces massive cascading failure risks and tight coupling. Message Queues (MQ) decouple distributed systems.
Architectural Paradigms
- Work Queues (RabbitMQ/BullMQ): A heavy payload (e.g., video processing) is published to a queue. Multiple worker nodes consume tasks sequentially. This enables precise buffering during traffic spikes, ensuring backend servers are never overwhelmed.
- Publish/Subscribe (Redis/Kafka): Services broadcast events across topics. Interested services subscribe to these topics independently, driving robust Event-Driven Architectures.
Reliability Assurances
Robust brokers guarantee delivery. If a consumer crashes midway through processing a message, the unacknowledged message is automatically requeued and handed to a healthy worker instance, ensuring zero data loss.
