RESTful API Design Principles
Architectural Elegance: RESTful API Design
Representational State Transfer (REST) is the architectural discipline dictating strict standardization over stateless HTTP services. A meticulously designed REST API ensures determinism and discoverability for downstream consumers.
Resource Orientation
REST pivots entirely on conceptual "Resources". URLs must consist exclusively of nouns representing these entities (e.g., /users/123/invoices). Avoid placing verbs in URLs (e.g., /getAllUsers is an anti-pattern).
HTTP Verb Semantics
The operational intent is mapped strictly to HTTP methods:
- GET: Idempotent retrieval of data.
- POST: Creation of a new sub-resource.
- PUT: Idempotent, holistic replacement of a resource payload.
- PATCH: Partial, delta-based modification of a resource.
- DELETE: Idempotent removal.
Embracing strict HTTP Status Codes (e.g., 201 Created, 403 Forbidden, 409 Conflict) offloads error-state logic to standardized protocol layers.
