Caching Strategies

Advanced Caching Strategies

Caching is the most effective mechanism for scaling highly concurrent Node.js APIs and mitigating load on expensive database layers.

Common Topologies

Distributed caching layers (such as Redis or Memcached) sit between the Node.js application layer and the database layer.

Key Patterns

  • Cache-Aside (Lazy Loading): The application checks the cache first. If a cache miss occurs, the application queries the database, writes the result to the cache, and then returns it. Ideal for read-heavy workloads.
  • Write-Through: Data is written to the cache and the backing database in the same transaction. This guarantees data consistency but adds latency to write operations.

Eviction & Stamping Mitigation

Employing Time-to-Live (TTL) prevents stale data. Furthermore, preventing Cache Stampedes (where multiple requests hit the DB simultaneously upon expiration) requires techniques like probabilistic early expiration or locking mechanisms.
