Categories of SQL Commands

SQL statements are organized into five primary functional categories based on their operational purpose.

Category Purpose Key Commands
DDL (Data Definition) Defines & alters database schemas CREATE, ALTER, DROP, TRUNCATE
DML (Data Manipulation) Modifies records stored in tables INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, MERGE
DQL (Data Query) Queries and retrieves data SELECT
DCL (Data Control) Manages permissions and rights GRANT, REVOKE
