N-API and Native Addons
N-API & Compiling Native Addons
JavaScript remains inherently constrained by V8 execution speeds. When tackling intensive computational tasks (like image manipulation or machine learning algorithms) or when requiring direct communication with low-level OS drivers, Node.js allows for C/C++ native addons.
The Evolution to N-API
Historically, Native Abstractions for Node (NAN) tied C++ bindings directly to the underlying V8 architecture. When V8 updated, addons frequently broke. N-API (Node-API) provides Application Binary Interface (ABI) stability. An addon compiled with N-API against Node v14 continues to work flawlessly in Node v20 without recompilation.
Modern Alternatives
While C++ addons remain powerful, WebAssembly (Wasm) and Rust (via libraries like Neon) provide highly performant, memory-safe, and portable alternatives to native binary compilation.
